A common assumption is that an orphan is a child who has two deceased parents. This weekend is Orphan Sunday, an annual remembrance that reminds us that care and concern for orphans is of particular concern to Christians.Here are five facts you should know about orphans in America and around the world:1. • 10,000 unaccompanied migrant children are missing in Europe (Europol)• There are over 250 million children living in countries affected by conflict (UNICEF).• 1 in 4 of the world's children live in a conflict or disaster zone (UNICEF).• 20 people are forced to flee from their homes every minute (UNHCR). 10 Facts about Orphans in Zimbabwe. No matter what the precise count, the global total of orphans equals about one-half the population of the United States. According to a 2016 statistic, there are currently more than 460,000 orphans in China. The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, set the number at 132 million as of 2005. The general public in places such as the UK, USA and Australia have limited knowledge about what growing up in an orphanage is actually like, but on the whole believe that supporting one is a good thing to do.We’ve pulled together some of the key facts and statistics on orphanages to help start a larger conversation:The following resources have been developed by members of the ReThink Orphanages coalition in order to support schools and universities to strengthen their work around overseas student volunteering and travel.Several universities in Europe have pledged not to support orphanage volunteering by committing to not allow the promotion of such opportunities to their students.
