Street Story Quilt
During the Civil War, women sewed quilts for soldiers, sometimes stitching the pieces of fabric into a flag pattern. Unable to generate interest in her manuscript, Ringgold wrote an autobiographically-inspired story on a quilt in permanent magic marker.The quilt pictured here, “Tar Beach,” is one of Ringgold’s most beloved works. Those early quilts tell the history not only of early American quilting, but also the early history of the country. She turned to quilting as an act of storytelling when she was having trouble selling her autobiography. The quilt featured in our newsletter, “Story Street Quilt” depicts a scene from the same New York City neighborhood.
