EOSDIS makes the agency's large repository of data accessible and freely available to the public. Landsat-7 is part of the Landsat program, one of the longest existing environmental satellite programs. The most commonly used instrument providing information on sea surface temperatures is the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA meteorological satellites, NOAA-14, NOAA-15, and NOAA-16. NOAA began collaborating with NASA in this endeavor and NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) program was started during this cooperative period. Geo-synchronous environmental satellites are used primarily for weather forecasting. About the size of a basketball, and weighing only 183 lbs, Sputnik took about 98 minutes to orbit the Earth. The first of NOAA’s geo-stationary operational environmental satellites (GOES) was launched in 1975. The operational JPSS constellation currently consists of the NASA-NOAA Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership satellite, the technology pathfinder mission for JPSS launched in 2011, and NOAA-20, previously called JPSS-1 and launched in 2017. NOAA-N (POES-N) launched May 20, 2005 and is the latest polar-orbiting satellite developed by NASA for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). For example, marine animals, such as sea turtles and manatees, can be fitted with transmitters that relay information about their location. Depending on which sensors the satellite maintains on board, it may view a swath of only a few mi wide to one that is more than 1500 mi wide. This allows them to hover continuously over one position on the surface. Since the 1960s, NASA has developed polar-orbiting operational environmental satellites for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA-N collects information about Earth's atmosphere and environment to improve weather prediction and climate research across the globe. The program, in place since 1982, has saved about 18,000 lives.NOAA-N is the first in a series of polar-orbiting satellites to be part of a joint cooperation project with the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMESTAT).NOAA-N' (NOAA-N prime”) will be the last in the series of TIROS ATN. POES (Polar Operational Environmental Satellites) maintain an orbital height of about 500 mi and take about 100 min to complete an orbit. Currently, GOES-8 and GOES-10 are operating, one for the western portion of the United States, the other for the Eastern portion.Sun-synchronous satellites pass over a point on the Earth at the same time each day. Soon after the launches of the ITOS satellites, the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite (SMS-1) became the first prototype geostationary satellite in 1974. They are used to monitor the development of major storms, such as hurricanes, nor'easters, and tornadoes. The NASA Worldview app provides a satellite's perspective of the planet as it looks today and as it has in the past through daily satellite images. This sensor collects data every day, creating an image by combining rows of 2,048 pixels (picture elements, or "dots") as it passes over the Earth’s surface. NOAA-N' has a planned launch date of February 2009 from Vandenberg AFB, CA by a Delta II launch vehicle. The spacecraft will continue to provide a polar-orbiting platform to support (1) environmental monitoring instruments for imaging and measuring the Earth's atmosphere, its surface, and cloud cover, including Earth radiation, atmospheric ozone, aerosol distribution, sea surface temperature, and vertical temperature and water profiles in the troposphere and stratosphere; (2) measurement of proton and electron flux at orbit altitude; (3) data collection from remote platforms; and (4) the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system.Additionally, NOAA-N' will be the fifth in the series of support dedicated microwave instruments for the generation of temperature, moisture, surface, and hydrological products in cloudy regions where visible and infrared (IR) instruments have decreased capability.NOAA Polar Operational Environmental Satellites N SeriesHow do Earth, the planets, and the heliosphere respond?Weather and Atmospheric Dynamics Focus Area Publications and Research HighlightsCarbon Cycle and Ecosystems Focus Area Publications and Research HighlightsIndia overtakes China as top emitter of sulfur dioxideLocal land subsidence increases flood risk in San Francisco BaySea surface salinity could provide new insight into severe stormsSeeing the connection between neighboring volcanoes at depthWarm ocean waters off Greenland put glaciers at more risk

This atoll is part of the Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve.Satellites providing environmental imagery are used jointly with other organizations that receive data from various sensors. In 1974 and 1975, NASA designed, built, and launched the first two geosynchronous weather satellites (Synchronous Meteorological Satellites [SMS-1] and SMS-2). The imagery it collects is being used to describe reefs, coastal habitats, and similar environments. Geo-synchronous satellites orbit the Earth at a speed matching the Earth's rotation. As the capabilities of these satellites improved, they would evolve into NOAA’s current polar-orbiting satellites, the backbone of the global overserving system.
