Something like A Suitable Boy that I could sink into This was the first book I've read by Anna Quindlen, and it was mega-disappointing. and i have no feelings about new york, since i've nnot a great book. I usually like Anna Quindlen's work, but it took everything I had not to abandon this book in the middle. I can't believe it took me this long to read this book.
Then I got drawn in. I'm not having much luck. Unlike most novels I read, I was not enamored with either of the central characters, it was their co-stars who struck my fancy. The effect of Meghan’s on-air truth telling reverberates through both their lives, affecting Meghan’s son, husband, friends, and fans, as well as Bridget’s perception of her sister, their complex childhood, and herself. It doesn't have characters, it has cliché after cliché. It wasn’t my dream job, but after two years of Council hearings, budget reports, and the like, many of which ended up on page one, there was no longer the sense that I couldn’t do hard news. The powerful connection between them is undeniable and told as tho you were sitting there listening to their conversations, watching them as they moved through a personal tragedy and were made better for it. It's funny, sad, interesting, educational -- I couldn't put it down.I "read" this novel by Anna Quindlen on CD and highly recommend it. The story firmly held my interest, a page turner to be sure. When Meghan makes a profane comment on a live mic on air her career goes down in flames. What I love is the flip side of that: that there is such enormous generosity. I can totally understand that; we’ve had it up to here with the sensitive man, and Irving is pure retro. Don't waste your time. A page turner, but suffers from a lack of imagination.
